Isolators and controlled microclimate

Protecting sensitive products and people

When protecting sensitive products, components, ingredients or people from airborne particles, microorganisms or aerosols, it is often critical to minimise the controlled space required for these activities.

Sensitive production lines requiring tightly controlled environments can be costly to operate, with high investment costs and even higher operational costs, along with a significant environmental footprint. In such cases, isolator design or microclimate solutions may provide an effective alternative when developing or expanding production facilities. Some transitions are straightforward, while others require more extensive adaptation. AirSon supports these solutions with solid experience and access to dedicated air technology laboratories for testing and optimisation.

What is an isolator

A typical isolator is an airtight chamber with negative or positive pressure to protect either the product or personnel. It is typically used in the pharmaceutical industry to protect the workers from hazardous ingredients. However, the isolator design strategy may also be used for many other processes and applications with proven effectiveness.

For less stringent requirements, a laminar airflow (LAF) solution with defined openings may offer a more efficient alternative. In this case, static pressure and chamber tightness are less critical. Instead, the focus is on controlled airflow velocity, either inward or outward, to protect the product or personnel.

From very small localised control zones to table-sized incubators

Controlled microclimate solutions range from small localised control zones to larger enclosed systems. The definition depends on the specific application and process requirements.

A wide range of solutions exists to minimise and optimise controlled environments. AirSon supports the development of tailored solutions based on current and future production requirements, from early concept through to turnkey delivery or procurement support.
